Overview

The Lenovo Tab Extreme is a 14.5-inch Android tablet shown in January and sold from June 2023 in the US, the UK and Europe; in China it was the Legion Y900, in Japan the NEC LAVIE Tab T14. Reviewers saw it as a big screen for films and a laptop replacement: How-To Geek gave it 8/10, Pocket-lint 4/5, Android Headlines 5/5.

Its 16:10 OLED screen, a wide format made for videos, is about 16 % larger than that of the 13-inch iPad Pro: 3000 × 1876 pixels (244 ppi), 120 Hz, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, glossy. Notebookcheck measured 479 nits and AndroPlus 498 nits; XDA and How-To Geek found it dim in sunlight, with glare.

The Dimensity 9000, a 2022 flagship chip, runs apps and games smoothly; AndroPlus saw no throttling. It has 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, microSD, Google Play and Widevine L1 for HD streaming (AndroPlus). Lenovo promised Android 16 and security updates until 2027 (Lenovo PSREF). Pocket-lint and How-To Geek note that many Android apps work poorly on the big landscape screen.

The Precision Pen 3 was included in most markets. XDA called the keyboard case with touchpad probably the best on any tablet; with it, the set weighs about 1.5 kg (tablet: 740 g, heavy for leisure use according to Pocket-lint). Reviewers praise the eight JBL speakers. Battery life depends on use: 9to5Google and How-To Geek found it long, XDA estimated a little over five hours of work, Android Headlines 5 to 6 hours of screen time. The 68 W charger fills half the battery in 30 to 35 minutes. One USB-C port sends video to a monitor, the other lets the tablet work as one.

Announced at $1,199.99, it sold for $949 at Best Buy with pen and folio case, $1,000 at Lenovo with pen and keyboard (XDA), €1,299 in Germany (Caschys Blog) and £999 in the UK.

Pros

  • Beautiful, huge OLED display
  • More affordable than Apple’s and Samsung’s flagships
  • 2 USB ports
  • Great “Magic Keyboard”-style keyboard (optional)
  • Stylus is included (Precision Pen 3)
  • Superfast 68 W charging

Cons

  • Display max brightness (500 nits) is ok, but not great
  • Only Wi-Fi, no 5G option
  • Very reflective display
  • 16:10 aspect ratio is not ideal for everyone
  • Only four years of security updates (until March 2027)

Performance

Lenovo Tab Extreme: Performance

The Lenovo Tab Extreme is powered by the relatively old MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor, released in 2021 and built on a 4 nm process. It is a mid-range chip, fast enough for multitasking, drawing apps and most games; only the most demanding games and video editing will push it to its limits. Compared with other large tablets:

  • The Apple M5 in the Apple iPad Pro 13″ (M5) is about 3.5 times faster.
  • The MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra is about twice as fast.
  • The Lenovo Tab Extreme is about 2.5 times faster than the Meswao MES-B3 (Pro) and its MediaTek Helio G99.

Brightness

Lenovo Tab Extreme: Maximum brightness

The screen of the Lenovo Tab Extreme reaches 400 nits according to Lenovo, which is enough indoors, but not for outdoor use in the summer (600 nits is the minimum). Notebookcheck measured 479 nits.
