I am a classical musician (violist) with 20 years of professional experience in orchestra and chamber music. For many years, I have been advising colleagues, students, and fellow musicians in the choice of their tablet.
Along with the many positives of using tablets, I’ve also seen the negatives: tablets crashing just before going on stage, batteries that don’t hold up during long rehearsal days, and missing page turner pedals in concert.
Overview
The TCL NxtPaper 14 is a large Android tablet with a matte, paper-like screen for reading, documents and notes. Tech Advisor liked its display modes but recommends it mainly at a discount. The Ugee Trio Pad UT3 uses the same hardware; Notebookcheck rated it 74% and Parkablogs found it fine as a general tablet.
The 14.3-inch screen is about 16% larger than the 13-inch iPad Pro and 1.5 inches wider. Its 3:2 format is closer to a sheet of paper than 16:10 screens, better for documents and sheet music. Sharpness is average (202 ppi). The NXTPAPER 3.0 matte surface removes almost all reflections and offers Regular, Color Paper and Ink Paper (black and white) modes. Tech Advisor found the 400-nit panel fine indoors but weak in sunshine; on the Ugee twin, Notebookcheck measured 521 nits, a very low 6-nit minimum and no PWM flicker.
The MediaTek Helio G99 is an entry-level chip: fine for reading, web and video, but Tech Advisor noticed occasional hesitations. There are 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage and no microSD slot. Android 14 comes with Google Play; TCL promises one Android upgrade and three years of security updates. Notebookcheck confirmed Widevine L1 (HD on Netflix and Prime Video) on the twin.
The T-Pen and the KB40 Bluetooth keyboard are sold separately in the US and Europe (TCL Canada includes the pen). On the twin, Notebookcheck found writing decent despite noticeable lag, while Parkablogs found lines too wobbly for drawing. Tech Advisor measured 7 h 44 min in the PCMark battery test; Notebookcheck measured 13 hours of Wi-Fi browsing on the twin. The tablet weighs 760 g, is IP54 splash-resistant and has four speakers that lack bass, one USB-C 2.0 port and no headphone jack.
It launched in Europe in September 2024 at €399 (£399 in the UK) and in the US in June 2025 at $399.99, only on Amazon.
Pros
- Matte NXTPAPER screen with almost no reflections
- Large 14.3-inch 3:2 screen, good for documents
- Ink Paper (black and white) and Color Paper reading modes
- Flicker-free, with a very low minimum (6 nits measured on the Ugee twin)
- 256 GB of storage and a metal body
Cons
- Slow Helio G99 processor and storage
- Not bright enough for direct sunlight (400 nits rated)
- Only 1 Android upgrade and 3 years of security updates
- Weak speakers with little bass
- No microSD slot; pen and keyboard sold separately in the US and Europe
Performance

The TCL NxtPaper 14 is powered by the relatively old MediaTek Helio G99 processor, released in 2022 and built on a 6 nm process. It is fine for streaming, web browsing, documents and casual games, but it is not made for demanding games, video editing or heavy multitasking. The same chip is used in 8 other tablets of our database, including the Meswao MES-B3 (Pro) and the Huion Kamvas Slate 13. Compared with other large tablets:
- The Apple M5 in the Apple iPad Pro 13″ (M5) is about 8 times faster.
- The Unisoc T7300 in the Alldocube iPlay 70 Max Pro is about 20 % faster.
- The TCL NxtPaper 14 is about 30 % faster than the Callsky Ctab 14 and its Unisoc T616.
Brightness

The screen of the TCL NxtPaper 14 reaches 400 nits according to TCL, which is enough indoors, but not for outdoor use in the summer (600 nits is the minimum). Notebookcheck measured 521 nits.
