Overview

The HP Elite x2 G8 is a 13-inch Windows tablet for companies, presented at CES 2021. Like a Surface Pro, it has a built-in kickstand and a detachable keyboard with a touchpad. HP ended sales in Japan on August 30, 2022, so today it is found refurbished or used (HP Japan).

The screen has a 3:2 format, taller and closer to a sheet of paper, better for documents. With the same diagonal as the 13-inch iPad Pro, it is about 4 % smaller in area. HP offered three glossy IPS panels with Gorilla Glass 5: 1920 × 1280 pixels (178 ppi) with 400 nits, the same resolution with 1,000 nits and the HP Sure View privacy filter, or 3000 × 2000 pixels (277 ppi) with 450 nits (HP Japan).

Inside are four-core 11th-generation Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 chips from 2020, with vPro versions for company IT. They are fine for office work but clearly slower than current chips. Memory is 8 or 16 GB and cannot be upgraded; HP Japan sold 256 or 512 GB SSDs. The tablet shipped with Windows 10 Pro, later versions with a Windows 11 Pro license, and it runs all Windows programs.

The backlit, spill-resistant Collaboration Keyboard (1.3 mm key travel) was in the box in Japan; the HP Rechargeable Active Pen G3 (4,096 pressure levels) was optional and attaches magnetically. HP rates the 47 Wh battery at up to about 11 hours (MobileMark 2018). The tablet weighs 820 g, or 1,175 g with the keyboard. It has Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a third USB-C port, a headphone jack, optional 4G LTE, an IR camera and a fingerprint reader, and it passed 19 MIL-STD-810H durability tests.

At launch in Japan it cost ¥220,000 with a Core i3 and up to ¥352,000 for the 3000 × 2000 vPro LTE version, keyboard included. No US or European list price was found.

Performance

HP Elite x2 G8: Performance

The HP Elite x2 G8 is powered by the relatively old Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, released in 2020 and built on a 10 nm process. It is a mid-range chip, fast enough for multitasking, drawing apps and most games; only the most demanding games and video editing will push it to its limits. Compared with other large tablets:

  • The Apple M5 in the Apple iPad Pro 13″ (M5) is about 2.5 times faster.
  • The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the Lenovo Yoga Tab Plus is about 10 % faster.
  • The HP Elite x2 G8 is about 3 times faster than the Meswao MES-B3 (Pro) and its MediaTek Helio G99.

Brightness

HP Elite x2 G8: Maximum brightness

The screen of the HP Elite x2 G8 reaches 400 nits according to HP, which is enough indoors, but not for outdoor use in the summer (600 nits is the minimum).
