I am a classical musician (violist) with 20 years of professional experience in orchestra and chamber music. For many years, I have been advising colleagues, students, and fellow musicians in the choice of their tablet.
Along with the many positives of using tablets, I’ve also seen the negatives: tablets crashing just before going on stage, batteries that don’t hold up during long rehearsal days, and missing page turner pedals in concert.
Overview
The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra, Samsung’s 2026 flagship, is a very large Android tablet for films, drawing, notes and office work. Reviewers praise its screen, speed and battery life: Engadget gave it 9 out of 10, Stuff 5 out of 5, and Expert Reviews its “Recommended” badge. Stuff notes that it changes little from the S11 Ultra, yet costs $200 more.
The 14.6-inch screen has 18% more area than the 13-inch iPad Pro. Its 16:10 format is a wide format made for videos. The AMOLED panel is sharp (239 ppi) and runs at 120 Hz. Expert Reviews measured up to 1,700 nits with HDR content. The anti-reflective glass (Stuff) is still glossy and catches the light in bright rooms (Expert Reviews).
The MediaTek Dimensity 9500 is clearly faster than the S11 Ultra’s chip, but slower than the iPad Pro with M5 (Expert Reviews). It has 12 or 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB to 1 TB of storage and a microSD slot. It runs Android 17 with One UI 9, Google Play and the DeX desktop mode, and gets updates until September 2033. Like earlier Galaxy Tab S models, it should support Widevine L1 (HD on Netflix and Prime Video). Reviewers find fewer tablet-optimized and creative apps than on the iPad (Expert Reviews, Stuff).
The S Pen (no Bluetooth) is in the box; the Pro Keyboard with touchpad costs £399 (about $400). Engadget measured 19 h 39 min of video, Expert Reviews 19 h 44 min, about 2.5 hours more than the S11 Ultra. A 45 W charge takes about 95 minutes (no charger in the box). It is 5.1 mm thin, weighs 692 g and is IP68 rated. Its four speakers are loud but light on bass. There is only one USB-C port (Engadget, Tech Advisor) and no headphone jack.
Sales start on October 7, 2026. The 12 GB / 256 GB Wi-Fi model costs $1,399.99, £1,399 and €1,539 in Germany (Notebookcheck).

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, released in 2025 and built on a 3 nm process. It is one of the fastest chips in any tablet: it handles everything, including heavy video editing, 3D work and the most demanding games. Compared with other large tablets:
- The Apple M5 in the Apple iPad Pro 13″ (M5) is about 50 % faster.
- The Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is about 20 % faster than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra and its MediaTek Dimensity 9400+.
- The Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is about 5 times faster than the Meswao MES-B3 (Pro) and its MediaTek Helio G99.
Brightness

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra reaches 1,000 nits according to Samsung, which is very bright: the screen stays readable outdoors, even in direct sunlight.
