Author Johannes Eva (viola)I am a classical musician (violist) with 20 years of professional experience in orchestra and chamber music. For many years, I have been advising colleagues, students, and fellow musicians in the choice of their tablet.

Along with the many positives of using tablets, I’ve also seen the negatives: tablets crashing just before going on stage, batteries that don’t hold up during long rehearsal days, and missing page turner pedals in concert.

Overview

The Surface Pro 13-inch, 12th Edition (June 2026) is Microsoft’s Windows 11 tablet with a built-in kickstand and an optional keyboard: a laptop replacement. The Snapdragon X2 Plus comes with an LCD, the faster X2 Elite with an OLED. Few full reviews exist. Notebookcheck gave the OLED model 84 %, but calls it a small upgrade over the 2024 model for $300 more and advises buying the older model while it lasts.

The screen is slightly smaller than the 13-inch iPad Pro’s. Its 3:2 format is taller than 16:10 and closer to a sheet of paper, better for documents and sheet music. At 2880 × 1920 pixels (266 ppi) and 120 Hz it is sharp and smooth. Notebookcheck measured about 600 nits (930 nits in HDR) and accurate colors on the glossy OLED, but also PWM flicker (480 Hz) at 80 % brightness and below. On the 2024 LCD model, Notebookcheck measured 615 nits and no flicker.

The processor is only a few percent faster than in 2024, the graphics clearly faster; Microsoft uses the slowest X2 Elite. The tablet gets hot under load. It has 16 to 64 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB on a replaceable SSD. Most apps run on Windows on Arm, but some games and drivers do not. Microsoft provides driver and firmware updates until June 2032.

Pen and keyboards cost extra; the keyboards store and charge the pen. Microsoft claims up to 15.5 hours of video; Notebookcheck rates the battery life as decent. The tablet weighs 895 g. It has two USB4 ports plus Surface Connect, but no headphone jack or card reader. In Germany, no charger is included (heise).

Launch prices were $1,499 and €1,599 (X2 Plus, 16 GB, 256 GB), and €1,899 for the X2 Elite with OLED (ComputerBase). In October 2026, Microsoft sells it from $1,349.99. The 2024 model and the business versions (also with Intel chips and 5G) look the same.

Pros

  • Sharp 13-inch 3:2 screen (266 ppi, 120 Hz)
  • Bright, accurate OLED option (600 nits, 930 nits HDR measured)

  • Faster graphics than the 2024 model, up to 64 GB of RAM
  • Two USB4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, replaceable SSD
  • Driver and firmware updates until June 2032

Cons

  • Expensive: from $1,499 / €1,599, keyboard and pen extra
  • Small upgrade over 2024 (CPU only a few percent faster)
  • Gets hot under load and in games
  • OLED flickers (PWM, 480 Hz) at 80 % brightness and below
  • Windows on Arm: some games and drivers don’t work
  • No headphone jack, no card reader; no charger in Germany
