Author Johannes Eva (viola)I am a classical musician (violist) with 20 years of professional experience in orchestra and chamber music. For many years, I have been advising colleagues, students, and fellow musicians in the choice of their tablet.

Along with the many positives of using tablets, I’ve also seen the negatives: tablets crashing just before going on stage, batteries that don’t hold up during long rehearsal days, and missing page turner pedals in concert.

Overview

The Kamvas Slate 13 is a 12.7-inch Android tablet for drawing and notes from the pen-display maker Huion, launched in April 2025 with a pen and a stand case. Reviewers like its solid aluminum build and its price but find the screen dim and the pen imprecise: Creative Bloq gives it 6/10, GameRevolution 7/10. It suits students and hobbyists more than professionals.

The IPS screen is about 5 % smaller than the 13-inch iPad Pro’s. Its 4:3 format (exactly 1.36:1) is taller than the 16:10 of most Android tablets, better for drawing, documents and sheet music. At 213 ppi (2176 × 1600) it is reasonably sharp. The nano-etched matte glass cuts reflections, but Huion rates it at only 350 nits, and The Gadgeteer, Inspiration Grid and Digital Camera World found it dim, with muted colors. Five reviews report 60 Hz, not the announced 90 Hz.

The MediaTek Helio G99 is an entry-level chip from 2022. With 8 GB of RAM it runs the web, videos and drawing apps smoothly, but slows down with large canvases and RAW photos (Creative Bloq, Digital Camera World). Storage is 256 GB, plus microSD (up to 1 TB). Android 14 is clean, with Google Play; Huion has published no update policy, and the Widevine level (HD on Netflix) is unknown.

The H-Pencil (4,096 pressure levels, tilt) is well made, but all six reviews saw wobbly lines, and Parkablogs notes a high activation force and weak palm rejection; the included glove helps. There is no official keyboard and no fingerprint or face unlock. Parkablogs got 7 to 8 hours at maximum brightness from the 10,000 mAh battery. At 682 g, it is about 100 g heavier than the 13-inch iPad Pro. Reviewers find the four speakers muffled, and the only port is USB-C (USB 2.0).

Prices: about $449 in the US (often $409 at Huion), £499 in the UK, and €509 at launch in Germany (Digital Camera World, Notebookcheck).

  • Good battery life (7–8 h at full brightness)

  • Dim screen with muted colors (350 nits)
  • Pen wobble on slow lines, weak palm rejection
  • Entry-level chip, slow with heavy apps
  • Muffled speakers
  • No fingerprint or face unlock
  • No update policy published

Performance

Huion Kamvas Slate 13: Performance

The Huion Kamvas Slate 13 is powered by the relatively old MediaTek Helio G99 processor, released in 2022 and built on a 6 nm process. It is fine for streaming, web browsing, documents and casual games, but it is not made for demanding games, video editing or heavy multitasking. The same chip is used in 8 other tablets of our database, including the Meswao MES-B3 (Pro) and the TCL NxtPaper 14. Compared with other large tablets:

  • The Apple M5 in the Apple iPad Pro 13″ (M5) is about 8 times faster.
  • The Unisoc T7300 in the Alldocube iPlay 70 Max Pro is about 20 % faster.
  • The Huion Kamvas Slate 13 is about 30 % faster than the Callsky Ctab 14 and its Unisoc T616.

Brightness

Huion Kamvas Slate 13: Maximum brightness

The screen of the Huion Kamvas Slate 13 reaches 350 nits according to Huion, which is enough indoors, but not for outdoor use in the summer (600 nits is the minimum).
